HOSPITALITY

As you can see there’s been a bit of a dip in the Slovenian hospitality recently, so I’m really, really sorry, but the gloves are off.

The chicken factory owns half of this town, including restaurants where you should "not be too surprised if you see big eyes of the greenish water sprite covered with seaweed, or a silhouette of the girl light as the meerschaum in our restaurant’s windows."

Although it does promise a fairy tale atmosphere, they sadly omit to mention that you should also not be too surprised to find yourself inhaling the rank aroma of poultry waste rendering, which is released just across the river on a regular basis.

Twice a week I make it, maybe three.

CHICKS

On a train to Austria I met some chicks coming back from Croatia. When I told them where I lived, it emerged that they often passed the town, which has a beautiful and historic medieval centre.

But they had never been there, they just drove past.

Why? "Oh, we just know it as the place where you have to wind the car windows up because of the smell," was the reply.

This hints at the secret of its limited success in the tourism sphere. Though there’s nothing about the factory’s stink in the holiday brochures, seems this was the main impression. And it only takes one of those.

CHICKENSHIT RESEARCH

Seems that for years they’ve been loading the population with arsenic from antimicrobial and coccidiostatic veterinary agents, a little of which stay in the chicken but most of which end up in the waste.

A broilerhouse chicken produces between 1.46 and 2.67 kg of waste in its life span. How interesting is that!

Seems the smell hanging over the place is rather more than the nuisance the locals have somehow learned to ignore, see www.ptuj.co.uk/rendering.htm

Arsenic causes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and diminished intellectual function. Yeah, yeah, but what about the chicken?

A POULTRY AMOUNT

Arsenic is a roadblock to potential animal waste management solutions and so I have to ask the Director of the chicken factory how long it has been since they stopped using arsenical veterinary treatments, and when they are going to spend some money on up-to-date gas scrubbers to stop the smell?

As the waste is too poisonous to pelletize and sell for fertiliser for food crops, it should be used on golf courses where there is less risk to the normal population, although it’ll still end up in the groundwater along with the nitrates that brought the city’s water supply to a standstill for months in the early 1990s.

You’d think with all the professors and magisters in Slovenia they’d be able to figure out a way to stop one of their best tourism destinations smelling of burnt gizzards.

So to avoid actually doing anything, Slovenia must send in an army of social workers and economists in to write reports with titles like "Giblet Gases and Juvenile Delinquency: What The Fug?", and "Can We Afford To Stop Raining Shit On Our Own Restaurant And Still Pay Our Chicken Factory Workers One Euro an Hour?"

Yes, really.

Maybe they’re just chicken.

Me, oh I’m nobody. And I smoke weed, by the way. It’s the only way to hide the smell. But that’s illegal, and I’m a foreigner, so obviously it’s me that’s the problem, not the volatile organic compounds.
