Does anybody know about watering new Sod?

July 31, 2010

Question by Becky: Does anybody know about watering new Sod?
Our builder told us that new Sod has to be watered 2 times a day for 45 mins in each spot. This sounds like a lot to me. Anybody know how often it should be watered?

Plus will the sod be ok for now. We don’t move in for another week and the sod as already been put in. Nobody is watering now, will it be ok?

Answer by Perry N
You need to keep new sod damp, I think your builder gave you correct information. If nothing else, make the trip once a day to water it.

Great Lawn Care – Truly Worth These Small Steps

Having the perfect lawn involves many things. And with those many things to do in taking care of your lawn, would it not be best if there is somewhere a set of guides to help you along? Well look no more, because here are some lawn tips that could be useful to you.

Important Lawn Care Considerations

If you want a healthy and great looking lawn, then lawn care is important. The lawn care tactics you use are as much a part of lawn maintenance as the actual maintenance steps themselves.

So, first up, When you choose the grass for your lawn, make sure it is the right type. The factors that could affect your choice of grass include your location (because you may be living in a dry or wet part of the country).

Your choice of grass can also be affected by that grasses’ availability at a particular season and certain planting methods. Your lawn and garden will not be as perfect as you wish it to be if right from the start you didn’t prepare adequately.

Guide to Lawn Maintenance

Lawn management requires dedication on your part and good application of the skills you will need, which are not that hard to understand and learn.

One important lawn care necessity is lawn mowing. You cannot just let the grass in your lawn overgrow, can you? When you mow, use a sharp mower so that you would get the job done easily and fast. A sharp lawn mower is also best to avoid young grass seedlings from being uprooted.

Another important lawn care practice is regualr and adequate lawn watering. Naturally, if you do not water the grass in your lawn, it will dry up and eventually die. Know the requirements of the grass type you have planted and water accordingly.

You may need to water your lawn more during the hot seasons and be careful with timing too.

Another important thing to remember when you take care of your lawn is lawn fertilizing and of course you must know the right fertilizers for your grass.

That is why choosing your grass in the first place was important. So, do some research down at your local specialists and decide what you need to do and in what season.

You might also want to take into account insect control and relevant treatment too.

Aside from that, your lawn may need some aerating from time to time. The thatch – mowed bits and pieces of grass can pack the soil of your lawn as well as block the air from entering.

So you might consider that with your lawn management, using a hollow tine fork or other attachments that you might be able to use on your mower.

A lawn scarifier can be found in your garden center, as an attachment or a free-standing piece of kit, often inexpensive and very practical and effective.

Lawn weeding is also important. Though your lawn is mainly grass, you do not want other types of grass to be mixed in there. Also use the proper and best lawn equipment you can find to ensure a good job.

In fact, a good idea here is to meander around your lawn, just after you have cut it, with a small knife and cut out the biggest weeds. As you do this frequently the weeds weaken and die off. It’s a good investment of time for those bigger weeds.

Lawn care is important, for that beautiful expanse of green you have dreamt about, so make sure to do your best with it.

Question about Miracle Grow vs organic?

July 31, 2010

Question by Case J: Question about Miracle Grow vs organic?
So I’m growing watermelons, squash, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce and carrots. I would like to know if I can use miracle grow for any of them and which they would have the best impact on?

And also, would organic fertilizers be a better choice in terms of yield, growing time, and soil health?

Lastly, if i were to use organic fertilizers, is there anything I can use that i wouldnt have to BUY, to fertilize the soil/plants? Example: Banana peels, apple peels, fish skin, leaves are things that can help recycling, and can be found in the garbage/around the house.

THANKS SO MUCH

Sincerely, beginner gardener

Coffee grounds and egg shells are great organic compost. Also grass clippings and leaves.

Is Organic Food a Waste of Money?

Research has shown that fertilizers, pesticides and hormone supplements have successfully entered the food chain have become common place in our food and drink. Consequently, this has had a knock on effect on the environment and our health with concern increasing more and more.

Expensive labels?

Organic food costs more simply because it costs more money and time to prepare. For example certain types of apples can be sprayed up to 16 times with 36 different pesticides and 350 chemicals are regularly used in conventional farming. Only four are permitted in organic farming.
Even though this might be the case careful inspection into the food labelled â??organic’ can open up another can of worms. There are a few classes of organic product on the shelves which break down as follows:

Made with organic ingredients – Only 70% of the ingredients must be organic

Organic – At least 95 percent of ingredients are produced organically

100% organic – No synthetic ingredients are allowed by law

The price naturally increments skywards depending on how â??organic’ the produce really is and adds those unwanted pennies to your bill. At the same time it gives an insight into companies who use a minimum of organic ingredients to attain the label.

Many are turning to farmers markets springing up all over the UK, where on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon you can buy 100% organic fruit and vegetables without worrying about the ulterior motives of the big 3. Organic purists prefer a little soil on their carrots than the clinically prepared plastic packaged semi-organic alternatives in the supermarket. There are many online companies like Abel & Cole who will take your order over the internet or over the phone and deliver it straight to your door (soil included).

The organic industry came under criticism by the former head of the government’s food watchdog. “My advice would be not to worry about the organic, but worry about your kids having more vegetables,” said Sir John Krebs, head of the Food Standards Agency until April 2005. He had also said that there was no scientific evidence to prove that organic food was healthier.

Lord Melchett, policy director for the Soil Association retorted saying “[He] turns round and says, ‘well it would be much better to eat three portions of spinach a week than switch to organic’ – this is, I think, an intellectually flawed argument,”

You get what you pay for.
As with anything there is a trade off between how much you’re willing to pay for something and what you’ll get out of it; this I think we are all happy to accept. The issue here seems to be the size of this industry and the relative ignorance surrounding it, leaving the public to do their own research into what they’re buying to make sure they’re money is well spent.
