And how often should it be used. We have a big field that the fertilizer will be used on.

POO on the poo poo! Who wants to spread that on their lawn!!!??? Use High nitrogen turf food. IE: 28-4-8.
It would be better to use weed control. The weeds usually overtake the grass and in a field it sounds like they might be a bigger problem.
Second, how’s the pH? An application of lime might be in order. Dolomite lime is cheap, though slow acting. I would put it on now and allow the rains to help water it in.
And last, I would probably use the least expensive brand of fert. I always like the ones with micro-nutrients.
