Q&A: How do you use grass and weed killer?
September 30, 2010
Question by Nick: How do you use grass and weed killer?
Best answer:
Answer by labrat
I have 1 hectare, and am constantly fighting weeds. I use glyphosate (roundup) in a 5 litre weed sprayer. By trial and error I’ve discovered to save having to respray I need to double the recommended dose. End up using the same amount of spray, but half the time. Also, add a squirt of dishwashing liquid to the mixture to help it stay on the weeds better (this was advice given to me.)
Never spray when there’s a risk of the weeds getting wet. The pack states not to spray if rain expected in 6 hours, but I also avoid spraying after about 1 pm as the moisture from overnight dew also has a similar effect. If you spray too early the spray will run off with existing dew.
Always try to get to the weeds before they set seed, as the seeds will drop off anyway, ready to sow next years crop of fresh weeds.
I’ve also found nettles don’t respond at all if you spray them before you can identify individual leaves. It’s all trial and error, basically if your weeds are still looking healthy after about 2 weeks, respray.
