Lawn mowing is one of the most important elements of lawn management. It is one that has an impact on the growth of the plants on the lawn, and the appearance of the lawn. When we talk of a well kempt lawn vis a vis an unkempt lawn, one of the things that go into determining how ‘properly kempt’ the lawn is would be the lawn mowing. Let a lawn stay for a considerable period of time without mowing, and you will soon have it looking so bad that you would be better off with no lawn at all. The point in mentioning all this is to illustrate how important an element of lawn management mowing is. Simply put, as you get into developing a lawn, the one thing you need to keep in mind is that you will have to mow it at some point. In actual fact, as lawn owner or lawn manager, you should expect lawn mowing to be something you will be doing on a very regular basis, if you are to keep your lawn looking good. The onus, then, is on you to work out how you will be going about your lawn mowing.

Now there are many specific ways through which you can go about your lawn mowing. But in the final analysis, each of these ways can be classified as either being manual or mechanized. And we find many people considering setting up lawns finding themselves at a loss on which the best way to go about lawn mowing is. Granted, there would be no contention to the fact that mechanized lawn mowing tends to be less tiring than manual lawn mowing. Indeed, manual lawn mowing is one of the most tiring activities a person can engage in. So mechanization of the lawn mowing activity does make it much less tiring. On another account, there is also no contention to the fact that mechanized lawn mowing tends to be more effective, as the machines used for the purpose tend to be much more thorough than even the keenest of us can ever be.

But the machines that go into lawn mowing don’t always come cheap, in terms of what you have to pay for them as a purchase price. And their running costs are not very low either: they have to be powered one way or another – either through electricity or through fossil fuel, and neither of these energy resources comes cheap.

All this tends to leave many people confused on when they should consider mechanizing their lawn mowing functions.

As it turns, there are three factors you should look it, in making the decision on whether or not to mechanize lawn mowing. First is the lawn size: there are some lawns that are simply too small to justify the purchase of a mechanized mower for use on them (unless one happens to have a mechanized mower they can easily hire). Second is the type of vegetation grown on the lawn, as there are certain types of vegetation that lend themselves better to mechanized mowing than others. Third is the cost factor – whether or not you can afford to purchase (or hire) a lawn mower, and what the running costs for it will be. But this has to be done comparatively, because while buying and running a lawn mower may seem expensive, it could turn out that attempting to go about the lawn mowing manually would be more expensive- either in terms of labor costs or in terms of the time opportunity cost. The latter refers to what you could achieve elsewhere during the time you decide to dedicate to manual lawn mowing, compared to what you get to save by opting to go about your lawn mowing manually.

Question by Mr. Wiggins: How many people do you think will be interested in my lawn mowing business?
I am starting a lawn mowing business. I plan on distributing fliers to 36 potential customers in a nearby neighborhood. How many of these customers could I expect to purchase at least one mowing?

Answer by TexasJew
That’s a toughie! Give people good service at as low a price as you can. Don’t hurt yourself by going too low on the price, but 10% senior citizens and Veterans discounts helped my pool service.

Do good work at a decent price, and word of mouth will help you greatly.

Fall has to be the most perfect time for an outdoor get together. Invite a few friends over and celebrate. Just like when you entertain indoors, entertaining outdoors requires some sprucing up as well. Take an objective walk through your garden area and decide where you want everyone to gather.

Pick a focal point as your backdrop and you’re ready to begin.

Pull out the tallest or widest spreading weeds
Clip out dead branches (be sure to save any larger dead shrub or tree branches and “plant” them in a bucket with sand or gravel, spray paint it and add fun lights – voila! a decoration)
Remove any dead plants
Prune and dead head those plants with spent blooms
Add a few well placed splashes of color (such as newly planted containers, mums that you just found at the farmer’s market or sunflowers in tall containers or baskets will make a huge difference and they can cover up any imperfections)
If you can’t find fresh cut sunflowers, pick up some silk ones from your local craft store. They work great in a pinch. The newer silk ones look amazingly real now and it’s the color and atmosphere that you’re going for anyway
Remember, after the sun sets, add some candlelight and the atmosphere becomes magical
Sweep or hose off any stone, wood or concrete walkways, patios or decks the day of the gathering
Put down a new layer of mulch, or if you haven’t the time pick up a large bag of aged compost from the hardware store a day or two before the event and put a scoop of it here and there in spaces where the ground is visible. This limited effort will still give your garden a fresh, well kept appearance and really makes the plants pop.

A folding table or two will be perfect. No tablecloth? Use an old sheet or burlap and tie off the corners at the table legs or use hair bands to secure it by bunching the fabric immediately underneath the table at the corners and tying it off with the band. Quilts work nicely too and have better weight. Some potted herbs on the table make for interesting and wonderfully fragrant mini-centerpiece.

What to serve. Keep it simple and quick. Fall is a great time for singe pot dishes such as chili, hardy soups, coq au vin, lasagne or beef daube. Most of these dishes are perfect for the slow cooker, leaving you more time for other projects or just looking good. A few garnishes, bakery bread, bowls and spoons will allow the guests to help themselves. And, what better way to end a hardy fall meal than with brownies, apple pie, pumpkin rolls or spice cake? And though, it’s optional, a good (not necessarily expensive) red wine. Yummmmmm……

Here are a few suggestions for bringing to life some of those empty flower pots. All you need to do is select one plant from the first group, one to two plants from the second group and one to two from the third group. Do be mindful of your selected colors when pairing though. Try to select plants with contrasting colors and textures for best results.

Group 1 (Spotlight Plant):

Green giant
Hameln ornamental grass
Karley Rose ornamental grass
Morning Light ornamental grass
Magnolia Jane
Barberry Sunjoy Gold Pillar
Boxwood
Russian Sage
Nandina Firepower
Japanese Red Maple
Sambucus
Dark green or pyramidal arborvitae

Group 2 (Filler Plants):

Hellebore Ivory Prince
Heuchera Plum Pudding
Heuchera Mystic Angel
Autumn Brilliance Fern
Japanese Painted Fern
Sungold Cypress
Dianthus
Liriope
Ogon Grass

Group 3 (Draping Groundcover):

Angelina Sedum
English Ivy
Baltic Ivy
Creeping Rosemary
Elfin Thyme
Corsican Mint
Red Creeping Thyme
Kewensis Euonymus

Especially in Group 1, these suggestions are based on younger plants. After a couple of years in the container, they will be ready to be transplanted into a permanent location.

Add twinkle lights to trees, fence or frame. The clear ones with a golden tint are almost like candlelight and a few well placed candles are a great touch. Put some tiny gravel or sand in the bottom of old glass jars and then steady some chunky candles in them. If becomes a little breezy, they won’t blow out. The jars make excellent hurricanes and can safely double as walkway lights.

Whether you have a large garden party or an intimate tete-a-tete, these tips can make your gathering truly special.

Push lawn mower problems?

November 30, 2010

lawn problems
by Velo abzug

Question by Julie S: Push lawn mower problems?
Hi,

Like a bad owner, I left my push lawn mower outside during the winter with no cover. Now it won’t start. I added more fuel. I also added more oil but accidentally over oiled it, and when I started it, some of the oil leaked out the side, now it is at the perfect level according to the stick. Anyway, I was wondering what might be wrong with it? Any ideas would be wonderful. Thanks!

P.S. I am new to machinery, but specfic instructions will be well followed!
Update: I have changed the spark plug. Unfortunately when I filled it with oil it was a little much. When I tipped it back a bunch of oil spilled out from a spot behind the air filter. Now when I pull the string, that spot makes a wooshing noise. I filled the gas and added an element that will separate the water from the gas and clean out the engine (according to the man at Goodyear, they didn’t have any dry gas). The spark plug changed nothing. It now does the same thing as before. Just makes a wooshing noise from behind the air fllter part. Any ideas? I’m going to try the gasoline thing on the carbeurator as soon as I figure out how to take the air filter off. :)

Q&A: How much should I charge for mowing grass and yard work this summer?

mowing grass
by joguldi

Question by Mr. M: How much should I charge for mowing grass and yard work this summer?
I really do need some help determining how much should be charged for each service. How much should I charge for a riding mower vs. a push mower? How much should I charge for a ditch? How much for x number of acres? How much should I charge for pulling weeds/hourly maybe?

I am a college sophomore looking to make a little extra money this summer.

It depends on your experience and how much you are going to do. If you are going to edge around sidewalks and borders then you could probably get ten dollars for 1/3 acre average lawn. The pros only charge for the same size and they fertilize and aeriate also.

Q&A: Can I lay bricks right over the grass if I use a few layers of landscaping fabric?

landscaping grasses

Question by Mace: Can I lay bricks right over the grass if I use a few layers of landscaping fabric?
I need to add a row of 16 inch pavers to my sidewalk and it’s level in most places. Do I really need to dig up the grass in that spot or will laying a couple of layers landscaping fabric, layer of sand, then the brick work well?
