I have two very steep hills in my yard and want to plant a ground cover so that I dont have to mow there. Should I try to kill the grass and weeds with plastic before planting? What kind of prep. do I need to do before planting?

You should kill the grass and weeds, but not with plastic. If you are looking for something non-toxic, try spraying with hot water and vinegar mixture, or some of the over the counter
sprays that the garden centers sell. Wait a day or two and use your shovel and hoe and dig up all of the grass and weeds down an inch or so. Work in some new top soil and plant your new ground cover plants.

I am finishing an irrigation system and have found a good deal on the rain bird 5004 rotor heads, I currently have 80 hunter PGP ADJ heads that work great and do not want to compromise cost for quality, Menards, Home depot and Lowes all sell rain bird, please offer your opinion

Tho I am not running an irrigation system I have used many types of heads in systems and have found that rain-bird heads are long lasting and easy to work on. As long as the head is not damaged it can be fixed and cheaply also. Mowers and tractors are the biggest cause of non repairable heads. Hope it helps!

Question by casey_leftwich, normative ethics: When should I spread grass seed and fertilizer?
Last night, I went to Lowes and purchased some tall fescue grass seed and some Turf Builder fertilizer (with weed halter).
Temperatures here in NC have been in the 60s or 70s consistently all week long. Nights have been a little cool.
When should I spread the fertilizer and grass seed? Under what conditions (dry, wet)? Do I need to wait a period of time between spreading the two?
Any tips will help.

grass seed then fertilizer i would wait till april at least begining of course april showers bring may flowers so your grass will start growing in may.after you get the seed all down put the fertilizer right on top of it.
