Q&A: What does burning wood for heat do to the environment?
May 14, 2013
Question by Old Hickory: What does burning wood for heat do to the environment?
In December 2002 my home state had a massive ice storm that destroyed millions of trees. I read in a state forestry publication that for the good of the forrest the fallen limbs need to be burned with a controlled burning. He stated the insects living in the dead trees are multiplying by the millions. I’m not sure what kid of insect he said on a normal healthy tree you may only find a dozen inside and now they are finding thousands. Theses insect are killing trees and I have seen many (100s) die on my own property.
Now this past winter my state had another massive ice storm with millions of more trees damaged. We are looking at the same problem again. I don’t want to loose my trees. I have noticed the trees, dozens of them, that look sick will die in a few years.
I consider my self a conservationist. I love the outdoors and want to do what I can to protect my environment.
Does it hurt the environment to burn acres of fallen limbs in these kind of situations?
And if it does is it better to burn indoors as a fireplace, wood heater, or wood furnace in the wiinter to clear up my problem on a smaller scale? (I do understand this would take years to do.)
Does burning firewood hurt the environment? What is best for all? What is best for my trees?
By the way I am talking hardwoods such as oak and hickory.

Should illegal aliens be detained when caught driving without a license?
February 3, 2013
Question by Kize: Should illegal aliens be detained when caught driving without a license?
Do you believe illegals should be detained whether they get picked up for driving without a license or any other charge?
Should 287G go into effect after conviction of a crime or at time of arrest?
Do you honestly believe that these lawbreakers will show up in court if they know they will be deported?
Won’t they run to another state and commit more crimes?
_______________________________________________________
The federal government will no longer detain illegal immigrants caught driving without a license in Nashville.
Instead, the federal system wants to use its bed space to house and deport the most dangerous offenders.
The change is good news to advocates who have complained from the beginning, in spring 2007, that the focus of the local immigration enforcement program is misplaced on people who are only committing traffic infractions.
In fact, one of the biggest criticism of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has been that all offenders, from those driving without a license to those committing violent felonies, are treated to the same punishment once they are identified as illegal immigrants.
The sheriff, who has stood behind the efficacy of the program, says he will continue to screen every foreign-born person arrested, whether they go directly to federal custody or not.
“Just because the federal government is saying we need to prioritize who is detained, doesn’t remove the fact they’ll be held accountable in the courtroom,” said Sheriff Daron Hall.
“There is no shift. We are still processing everyone for every crime.”
Most of the 5,300 people sent toward deportation from Nashville’s jail in the past two years spent weeks shuffled from one jail cell to another before being sent out of the country. About 75 percent of them were picked up on traffic offenses ranging from driving without a license to DUI; 25 percent were charged only with license offenses.
Those people will now be eligible to be released on their own recognizance, allowed to leave jail once they’ve resolved their local charges and have a court date to see an immigration judge in Memphis.
Clearer priorities
Overcrowding in the federal prison system coupled with an effort by the federal government to establish clearer priorities regarding deportation spurred the change.
Even though immigration advocates hail the federal decision, deportation is still likely for the illegal immigrants screened through the program — known as 287g.
.
“For fairness and due process, the 287g program would best be implemented if it were used to screen after a conviction,” Weinberg said.
sagey – you did not answer the question. stop with the God bull already, you have no idea what religion I am and it does not play in the illegal alien problem. My job has nothing to do with the issue either. I do my job and do it very well. I fight against illegal invasion in my spare time. Whether it be at my break time or home time.
popeye – you are not an immigrant, immigrants have respect for laws, that is something you cannot have being an illegal.

Best kind of grass?
November 15, 2012
Question by Brian: Best kind of grass?
I live in central North Carolina in the Raleigh Durham Area. We recently bought a house and would like to improve the lawn. I looked into purchasing Zoysia plugs but have read some horrible reviews. Admittedly those complaints tended to be more of a customer service nature than quality but I am still wary of feeling “ripped off”
so, what would be the best kind of grass for me to plant? should i use plugs? seeds? or should i roll out sod?
I have absolutely no green thumb, but my wife is very good with this kind of thing.
any advice would be much appreciated!
thanks

We have Bermuda which save us water.
Consult the lawn specialist – there’s one at Raleigh Farmer’s market, they are in an independent building located beside the wholesale market and local produce.

Did you ever marry a Chicago girl?
August 13, 2011
Question by CARL B: Did you ever marry a Chicago girl?
Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties. The first man had married a woman from Tennessee and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and housecleaning. He said it took a couple days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were done.
The second man had married a woman from Florida . He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. On that the first day, he didn’t see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dish es were done and he had a huge dinner on the table.
The third man married a girl from Chicago . He told her that her duties were to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn’t see anything, the second day he didn’t see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye; enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher and telephone a landscaper.

What do you think jury will receive no background information that illegal has shown repeated contempt of law?
August 3, 2011
Question by THE GREATEST GODDESS JILL: What do you think jury will receive no background information that illegal has shown repeated contempt of law?
I wanted to hate Jose Luis Huerta Mundo, the self-employed landscaper accused of making an illegal turn on a blind corner of a steep Newport Beach hill that led to the death of cyclist Michael Nine.
So I went to the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach on Monday to catch the trial of Mundo, who faces a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
And what’s not to hate?
Though the information will be kept from the 12-person jury, Mundo has had five previous driving-related convictions — four because he had no driver’s license and another for not registering his vehicle.
The jurors also won’t learn that Mundo, 38, of Anaheim, had been deported before, only to end up back illegally in the United States. He’s now facing another deportation (and being held without bail because of his immigration status).
In other words, the jurors will receive no background information that Mundo has shown repeated contempt for the law.
Legally, he should not have been behind the wheel that hot summer morning on July 15. And that’s reason alone to despise Mundo.
More fuel for hate is the prosecution’s contention that Mundo — when turning left from Harbor Ridge Drive onto the southbound (uphill) lane of Spyglass Hill Road — had to ignore two prominent traffic signs that prohibited the maneuver.
Two cycling buddies of Nine testified Monday that Mundo’s white Chevrolet stake-bed landscaping truck had pulled out into the downhill lane of Spyglass and stopped as the bikers rounded the curve at more than 30 mph.
Cyclists in front who managed to pass the vehicle shouted a warning to the rest of the pack: “Truck! Truck!”
But, according to the testimony, as the cyclists braked and swerved, the truck unexpectedly lurched forward toward the center of the two-lane street. Two riders were able to change course and steer clear of the rear of the truck, forcing one of them to go up on the sidewalk to avoid a wreck.
But for Nine — the cyclist nearest the center of the road — it was too late. With the truck suddenly in front of him, he slammed on his brakes, locked up his tires, and slammed body-first into the truck near its rear left wheel. A Newport Beach officer said he found hairs embedded the left back tire.
Nine died at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian shortly afterward. His injuries included two skull fractures, 18 broken ribs and a torn aorta.
The Santa Ana resident was married, a father of two young children, and all of 43.
Mundo’s version of the events — which emerged in court testimony from an interview with him at the accident scene — is another reason for rage because it doesn’t seem to make much sense.
He told officers that he simply had been driving up Spyglass to a landscaping job when he saw cyclists rounding the blind curve. The riders were in the wrong lane, coming straight at him. To try and avoid a collision, Mundo said he turned his truck to the right.
What’s wrong with that picture? For starters, Nine’s fellow riders and an investigation by Newport Beach police officers contradicted the story.
Second, by all accounts, Nine was a hell of a cyclist who would meet his friends three mornings each week at Kéan Coffee in Tustin for challenging rides around Orange County. He had made the descent down Spyglass perhaps hundreds of times. Going too wide on a blind, downhill corner at nearly 40 mph just wasn’t something veteran riders like him did.
If the prosecution’s story turns out to be true — and the decision should be in the jury’s hands before the week’s end — Mundo compounded the offense of driving without a license with blowing off two traffic signs to make an illegal left turn that resulted in the death of an innocent family man.

That’s standard procedure in a court case, illegal immigrant or not. The judge can use the previous record for sentencing purposes, but the jury must consider only the case at hand and not any previous cases so as not to bias them. For all the jury knows, this is the person’s first offense.

Is this considered a noise violation?
May 15, 2011
Question by Randomluvs F: Is this considered a noise violation?
I live on Long Island, New York. It is 9 AM, and my neighbor had his landscaper here. I woke up to his loud, obnoxius industrial lawn mower. It’s been on from 8 30 to 9. This happens almostn every day, because everyone on my block has a landscaper! Is this loud/early enough to be condidered a noise violation/disturbance?
Best answer:
Answer by LF ?’s MF
well the law varies from state to state. in my jurisdiction, lawn equipment and other loud equimpent is permittable after 7:30 am. Because people usually are up by then getting ready to go to work.
