Grab a book on “do it yourself” waterfalls at Home Depot. I could give you the lowdown, but it is easier to refer to a book with sketches and pictures, than a bunch of text in an answer column.

Benefits of Hunter Xc Controller Timers

Benefits of Hunter Xc Controller Timers
When selecting an irrigation control timer, consider the Hunter XC Controller Timers. They are versatile, yet easy to use and are perfect for the residential landscape. Here are some of the best features and benefits.
Three Programs, Four Start Times per Controller
With three separate programs and four start times available per program, a homeowner has almost unlimited flexibility to take care of each watering zone in the lawn.
Day Off Feature for Local Regulation Compliance
Many cities now have mandatory days off from irrigation. The Hunter XC irrigation controllers allow the user to select one mandatory day off, which will give the user peace of mind that the irrigation will not accidentally go off on a water restriction day, saving the user from a citation.
Several Power Backup Features
Anything plugged into an overall electrical system is bound to encounter problems with surges and power outages. A 3v lithium battery is included with the Hunter controllers to ensure that all programs are backed up in the event of a prolonged power outage. The controllers also have built-in surge protection to withstand electrical surges.
Diagnostic Programs for easy Troubleshooting
The Hunter Quick Check is a program that allows users to quickly check for problems within the controller system. The owner’s manual comes with a comprehensive list of common questions for troubleshooting and the, generally simple, solutions. Users can also run test programs from the controller.
Perfect Size for Residential Landscapes
The Hunter XC Controller Timers are the perfect size for residential landscapes. They offer the versatility of larger irrigation controllers, with ease of programming. These timers come in four, six or eight station capacity and can handle enough power to run up to three solenoid valves at one time.
Contractor Features
Irrigation and landscape contractors have the ability to set a default program that is stored within the memory of the controller and can be recalled in the event that a homeowner inadvertently resets the irrigation controller to a less than effective program. This saves valuable time in re-programming the machine.
Water Saving Features
Output for each program can be adjusted from 0% to 150%, and each program can be set on a 1-7 day rain delay. The multiple stations and multiple program features allow the irrigation settings to be tailored to each individual area of the lawn or garden, ensuring that each spot gets just enough water-not too much and not too little.
Flexible Run Times
In addition to flexible start times, each program can run from one minute to four hours on automatic programming. The system can also operate manually with use of the programming dial to override the exisiting program. After the manual override, the programs will return to normal during the subsequent cycle.
For residential landscapes managed by homeowners or landscape contractors, the Hunter XC Controller Timers combine the features and benefits of much more complicated systems in an easy to use and maintain interface.

Installing lawn sprinkler valves to existing system. Main wires questions or suggestions.?
July 29, 2010
Question by Richard S: Installing lawn sprinkler valves to existing system. Main wires questions or suggestions.?
On the wires leading to existing system I can see the main power lead. However all the other wires are different in color leading to existing valves. From the wire bundle two black wires (the only black wires) lead out to nothing and were left with no electrical end caps protecting. Manual says nothing on wiring valves. Any ideas on black wires? Or how can I splice in to existing system wires at valve point having one valve working at a time when system is operating? Am I going to have to get a new controler or run new wires existing controler?
Best answer:
Answer by Rob
The wire that goes to all the valves is the common. The other color wires go to the other wire on the valves. One colored wire per valve. That is how the valve gets power. It is common to run extra wires when doing a sprinkler system. So the 2 wires that are not being used are there just in case you ever need them. So tie one wire from each valve to the common then the other wire to an unused wire. Just make sure that your timer is capable of handling the extra valves.

Water Softener Installation Manual

Water Softener Installation Manual
Water softener installation is pretty complicated and not something to be undertaken by the faint-hearted. A professional plumber will install a water softener in around four hours, but if you have a sound DIY knowledge and feel like a challenge, we’ve outlined below the steps to installing your own water softener.
Before you begin, you need to identify where the main water pipe enters you house, as this will dictate where you install your softener in order to treat all the water that enters your property. The installation position that you choose needs to be near a waste pipe or drain as all the waste materials which build up during the softening process periodically need to be flushed out. You must also ensure that this is near a power socket, as the softener needs a power supply to work. Your water supply will be turned off during the water softener installation, so be sure that you know how to do this.
Most systems come with a bypass valve. This allows the flow of untreated water to your house if the water softener needs repairing or you move house and want to take the softener with you.
Some also include a drinking water pipe, which delivers untreated water to your taps and ensures that your drinking water is sodium-free. Your water softener comes with two copper caps to attach the bypass valve to your normal water pipe. Solder 3/4in risers onto the pipes. These act as a casing to prevent warping. Connect one piece of 1/2in plastic tubing to the overflow tank and a similar piece to the drain fitting of the water softener. Feed both to a nearby drain. Next, connect the bypass valve to the inlet and outlet fittings of the softener and secure in place. Place a rubber o-ring over the end of each pipe and feed the pipes into the bypass fittings. Once these are in place, tighten the nuts to
hold the pipes in place.
On most properties, the copper water piping acts as grounding for the electrics. By adding the plastic bypass unit, you will have interrupted this path so will need to create a small copper bridge between the two pipes. Your water softener is now ready for action. The manufacturer of your specific softener will provide you with guidelines on starting up your system which will include filling it with water, adding salt, setting the timer and checking that it is operating correctly.

How to Use Sprinkler Systems for Irrigation and for Control of Fire

How to Use Sprinkler Systems for Irrigation and for Control of Fire
Excerpts: Sprinkler systems are very important in the field of irrigation to get crop maturity with less amount of water. It is also used to minimize the effect of fire in vast areas.
Sprinkler system is mainly used for two purposes for irrigation and for controlling the effect of fire.
1. Sprinkler irrigation system:
Sprinkler irrigation system discharges water like rain fall. This is most effective as they cover the entire lands. This is suitable for wheat, gram, pulses, vegetables, tea, cotton and other types of crops. They spray water in small drops. They can be used in connection with pipes. Here water is allowed to flow by pumping. They are easy to install and maintain. They are strong and thus ensure long life. They are corrosion resistant. They are suitable for any type of soils. They may be made up of stainless steel or plastic. This system is the best one for irrigating lawns and crops with considerably less amount of water.
Sprinklers that spray in fixed patterns are known as sprays and they can be used under low pressure. High pressure sprinklers have impact mechanism. They can rotate in half or full circle. Floppy sprinklers are unique sprinkler system that does not have any moving parts. They are suitable for irrigating closely spaced crops. Full circle and part circle impact sprinklers are made up of stainless steel material and they ensure uniform rotation. Part circle sprinklers have adjustable arcs to rotate in all directions. So no area will be left dry.
2. Fire sprinkler systems:
Fire sprinkler system allows water flow under pressure to control fire. Previously they are used in factories and large industries. Now they are available in compact size to be used in small business concerns, homes etc. There are different types of Fire sprinkler systems. Wet pipe system has automatic sprinklers that will spray water under pressure through pipes connected to them. They are suitable for controlling fire in vast area. Dry pipe system uses air pressure to reduce fire. It is mainly used in unheated buildings or refrigerated coolers. It can be used in small areas. Deluge system has deluge valves to piping that supply water. This is more useful where fire spreads rapidly. Pre action system combines all the three systems. It is used in museums where books, rare arts etc are kept. It has two sub types. Single interlock and double interlock. Single interlock is just like dry pipe system and double interlock is similar to Deluge system. Foam sprinkler uses the mixture of water and foam that will result in foam spray from the sprinklers. This can be used in highly inflammable areas, air ports etc.
