When is the best time to water your lawn?

April 24, 2013

Question by Giselle: When is the best time to water your lawn?
what time during the day should your lawn be watered, and for how long?

Best answer:

Answer by Giselle
The best time to water would be early in the morning. it helps the ground absorb the water and you lose less to evaporation. You should water at around 5 in the morning for about half an hour. the time really depends on what kind of soil you have though. Don’t over water because you can drown your grass and other plants.

Can a lawn with seemingly dead grass be saved without re-sodding?

April 4, 2013

Question by JFalcon: Can a lawn with seemingly dead grass be saved without re-sodding?
We have a yard in South Florida which seems to be just ‘dying’, even though certain nasty little weeds manage to grow. The grass is usually a mix of patches of green and brown. We have received some advice to use Scott’s Weed & Feed and water continuously, while others say that we should re-sod our yard (a very large area and too costly). Is it possible to purchase any type of new grass that will take root, help stifle the weeds and get our lawn looking a bit more less than ‘dead’?

Rejuvenate Your Drought-Damaged Lawn Now

If you want to salvage your yard, now is the time to start working on it.

The first thing to do is to assess the condition of the turf. Standing back and looking at the lawn won’t tell you much, though. Many grass species, especially Kentucky bluegrass, will go dormant in hot, dry weather. Large portions of the lawn will turn brown and appear lifeless, but will recover as soon as rain or regular irrigation begins. By examining individual plant crowns, you can see whether portions of the lawn are actually alive or not.

To try to bring your lawn out of dormancy, irrigate to supply about an inch to an inch-and-a-half of water per week. Although I’ve long recommended applying all of your water at once to encourage deep soil penetration, Purdue recommends doing some irrigation every 3 to 5 days to pull the lawn out of dormancy. Dormant plants should recover and green up within 10 to 14 days. If the areas do not green up in 2 weeks, the grass is most likely dead and will need reseeding.

The amount of permanent damage in the lawn (dead areas, not dormant) will determine what kind of rescue techniques you’ll need to try. Minimal damage on Kentucky bluegrass lawns would be a generally thin turf with softball-sized holes. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass lawns will have golf ball to baseball-sized holes. Lawns in this state are best repaired by fertilizing.

To fertilize, apply 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet. If you are using a fertilizer such as (just to make up an imaginary analysis) 25-5-5, you will need four pounds of this product to supply 1 pound of actual nitrogen. The “real” fertilizer you should be using now should contain at least 30 to 50% of the nitrogen in a “slow-release” form. This information will be on the label, under the ingredients section. You want to use a slow-release form of nitrogen now to avoid further stressing your lawn, and to prevent a sudden burst of leaf growth.

Follow this with 1.5 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet in late November, after your final mowing. This late-season application should be in the form of quick-release nitrogen, such as urea.

If your lawn is more than just thin – if large sections are dead and weedy – then you will need to do more than just fertilize. You will need to reseed the lawn. Some lawns with moderate damage can be salvaged by overseeding into the existing lawn. A hand or power rake will remove dead debris, and disturb the soil enough to allow overseeding. For larger areas, you might want to rent a power seeder (also called a slit-seeder).

However, if the lawn is mostly dead, or has other problems, it may be time to do a complete renovation. Poor drainage, faulty irrigation, poorly-adapted grass species, perennial grassy weeds, compacted soil, buried construction materials, shade, and excessive traffic are just a few of the issues where reseeding is only a band-aid. In these situations, you are saving yourself lots of money (and LOTS of aggravation!) by doing a thorough renovation before applying the seed.

Grass seed MUST be applied between mid August and late September in our area of southern Indiana. If you wait until October, your lawn seed may germinate, but it will never have enough time to knit in and become established before winter. You may THINK you have a good stand of grass, but you’ll probably only have mud come spring.

After overseeding, you must supply water to get the seed to germinate, and to keep the seedlings alive. Sprinkle the seeds lightly 2 or 3 times a day until the seed germinates. At that time, begin to slowly taper off the waterings, until you are watering only a couple of times per week. Keep this up until the lawn goes dormant and the ground freezes. Avoid using any herbicides or weed-and-feed formulas until next year, as these chemicals will damage the young grass plants.

Speaking of chemicals: Saturday, September 14, will be our annual Tox Away Day at Roberts Stadium. I’ll have more information on this next week. Click here for details on Tox Away Day.

Here is a great site for you.

What is an easy way to start gardening?

March 30, 2013

Question by Ktwman: What is an easy way to start gardening?
I will return home at the end of July and would like to start some sort of gardening project in August. But I have never done any kind of gardening/landscaping. I have no idea what kind to buy and plant. I am completely clueless.

We live in Kansas were we experience all 4 seasons. It gets quite windy in our area. The front of the house is facing the south.

Answer by Joanne A.
(August is not a good time of year to start gardening in the USA except for states such as south Florida)

You are gonna love gardening, don’t try to do it all in one year. Get to know where the sun shines the most, and where the shaded areas are. Because you will need flowers for the sun areas, and flowers for the shaded areas.

Since you are a beginner, this year start your garden with plants that you get from a garden center or nursery. They are called bedding plants and come in a six pack. Look for a little tag sticking in the six pact showing directions on how to grow the plants. If the tag is not there, ask for one or buy something else. Directions are VERY important.

Seeds are not always easy to grow. And wildflowers are the hardest so don’t be disappointed if they don’t show up.

Two good things to do for yourself is to call your local County Extension Service and ask for all the information that they have about gardening in your area. They usually have a packet/kit of things for the home gardener.

And number two would be to pick up a couple of beginner books. You really do need to know about soil, compost, mulch and etc.

To keep from over watering or not watering enough, buy a water analyzer from a nursery or garden center. Be sure to read the directions. This will be one of your best tools.

Send for some free gardening catalogs and get use to the different types of plants, colors, and when to plant. They are filled with good informtion and pictures. And they will keep you company during the long winter months. Here is a list of just a very few. There are hundreds more:
