I seeded Fescue, How do i get rid of weeds?
May 30, 2011
Question by Jag: I seeded Fescue, How do i get rid of weeds?
I seeded Tall Fesque 2 months ago and the grass is doing well but there are millions of weeds growing with the grass as well. If I pull the weeds, it uproots the neighboring grass as well. What do i do?

i used fescue mainly because some of the areas i was seeding was sandy and had drainage problems. fescue is great for rapid growth and filling in but you do get weeds. if youre just trying to fill in like i did i would just use fescue then keep mowing it and using a fertilizer program with weed control. I use scotts turf builder program.. crabgrass preventer in spring, summerguard, winterguard…. eache one is avail in regular and with weed control… since i used fescue i use the weed control ones each time.

Q&A: Looking to improve the lawn this Spring.?
May 29, 2011
Question by cargo3: Looking to improve the lawn this Spring.?
I don’t think I need sod– too expensive anyways. We areate and dethatch every couple years. Fertilize about 4 times a year. Of course water the lawn so it stays green. We have this course grass, tall Fescue and maybe some crabgrass– it’s all mixed. Do you think overseeding with Ryegrass would help?? I thought about those Zoysia plugs too but I’m not completely sold on that either.
Thanks for the responses!!!! I never heard about Epsom salt on the lawn but I will certainly try. Half the time I don’t worry about the lawn. But when I see other lawns looking good and having nice, soft, plush grass- I want it too!!!
Oh– The tall fescue is cut down with a mover.. I think that’s just the name of it or maybe it’s “course Fescue” anyways I just want it out but I guess the only way is to re- sod!!! I’ll just keep doing what I’ve been doing.

If you want your lawn to look like it is golf course quality, throw some Epsom Salt over it in the spring, and water well for three days. You’ll be shocked at what it looks like afterwards! The whole neighbourhood kept coming over and asking me what I did last season! I am still amazed!

are we wasting money to hydroseed in the early spring?
May 29, 2011
Question by dsjnix: are we wasting money to hydroseed in the early spring?
We have a quote to hydroseed our front yard for 00. We were told that it would be better to wait until Fall, but that we should still get a good stand of grass if we do it now. Would we be wasting the money to do it now versus waiting till fall? We live in Georgia and want to plant tall fescue.

If you are considering hydroseeding I would assume that your yard is just dirt so I would not wait until fall you will end up with the best crop of weeds and hate looking outside. You might also consider sod.normally both spring and fall are good,it’s just hot summer sun that bakes things before a root system can take hold.

Lawn Question I could use some help here?

Question by Casey M: Lawn Question I could use some help here?
well i have a yard that i try and maintain its tall fescue it looks pretty good not many weeds, but in the back part theres what looks like grass but its slightly greener, and it has seeds on the top. this is odd because i thought grass got tall before it went to seed. can anyone tell me what this is and how to take care of it

Quite a lot of things look like grass, and different grasses are different shades of green, so its hard to tell. But some grasses don’t grow tall before they seed. If its grass I don’t think you need to worry about taking care of it – sounds as though its doing fine on its own. Don’t you mow your grass?

Q&A: What kind of grass is best?
May 29, 2011
Question by atomic8778: What kind of grass is best?
I live In Southern California and I’m about to tear out my old lawn to put in a new lawn but I’m not sure what type of grass is best. I need a grass that you can lie on and won’t hurt/prickle you. It also needs to be comfortable to walk around bare footed. I don’t mind the ones that require high maintenance. I also have one tree on the lawn but it doesn’t shade the whole lawn, just a patch of it and it doesn’t always shade the lawn because of sun up and down. So far, I’m looking at Zoysia, Tall Fescue, Bermuda, St. Augustine, and KY Bluegrass. Any suggestions???
Also with that, any suggestions of what tools to use to tear out an old lawn?

Golf Rulings?
May 28, 2011
Question by aquabob: Golf Rulings?
I hit into tall grass (fescue). Can I stomp on the grass to help with my swing plain as long as the ball does not move? If not, who decides whether it is a rule violation?
Best answer:
Answer by Mizer
It’s a violation. Here’s the ruling from the USGA:
13-2. Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing, or Line of Play. A player must not improve or allow to be improved:
· the position or lie of his ball,
· the area of his intended stance or swing,
· his line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole, or
· the area in which he is to drop or place a ball,
by any of the following actions:
· pressing a club on the ground,
· moving, bending or breaking anything growing or fixed (including immovable obstructions and objects defining out of bounds),
· creating or eliminating irregularities of surface,
· removing or pressing down sand, loose soil, replaced divots or other cut turf placed in position, or
· removing dew, frost or water.
However, the player incurs no penalty if the action occurs:
· in grounding the club lightly when addressing the ball,
· in fairly taking his stance,
· in making a stroke or the backward movement of his club for a stroke and the stroke is made,
· in creating or eliminating irregularities of surface within the teeing ground (Rule 11-1) or in removing dew, frost or water from the teeing ground, or
· on the putting green in removing sand and loose soil or in repairing damage (Rule 16-1).

how should i re-seed my grass?
May 28, 2011
Question by carnaby_fudge: how should i re-seed my grass?
i have a small patch of grass that gets dry/dead spots. it’s tall fescue. how should i re-seed the dry areas. should i dump a whole bunch of seeds in the loose dirt or just a little bit? i’ve been doing just a little but it takes forever to sprout up and sometimes it doesn’t go at all. also, should i be re-seeding periodically throughout the year? or just when i get the dry/dead spots? thanks
Best answer:
Answer by greydoc6
The best time of the year to re-seed a lawn is in early to mid September, perhaps extended out to early October. Seeding later does not always allow time for the new grass to “harden off.” The weather is beginning to cool down, however, in most areas you need to water. Keep the seeded area from drying out by frequent light watering for the first two weeks or until most of the seed has sprouted. Then a somewhat heavier watering twice a week or so, depending on heat and rainfall. A light layer of straw mulch helps. A starter fertilizer also helps.
You need not till up the dry area. Indeed, some claim this brings dormant weed seeds back to life. Slicing the soil with a mechanical slicer is the easiest, but smaller areas can be done with hand tools. About a quarter inch into the soil should suffice.
