Question by Dozer: What type of grass is best in this situation?
When i bought my house about a year ago the grass was in decent shape. I used a track loader to clean up the rest of the property and to take down some mature trees that were in the wrong spot for us. I then planted Falcon 2 tall fescue in the areas that i disturbed. I live in southside VA and we had one of the driest summers on record so needless to say the new grass didn’t fare so well. The old grass had it pretty bad to as some of it died back except for the areas that were in the shade from some large mature trees. I would like to know if creeping red fescue or kentucky bluegrass would be a good choice to sow. I plan on using a no till drill to sow it so i don’t have to till the whole yard up as there is still some good grass there. Kentucky 31 tall fescue does great in my area (all my pastures and hay land are KY 31) but the wife likes the finer blade grass. Any help with good southern VA grasses will be appreciated.
What type of tall fescue was it? Kentucky 31.

I sowed a mix of bluegrass,creeping red fescue and tall fescue.It did very well.It’s been there three years and I’m in western ky.Our weather was unbelievable dry this year too.

My lawn has areas where there is no grass growing at all……I have certain patches of grass here and there but in between those patches there is no grass growing just dirt…..how do i make my entire lawn green again and repair those patches????…..im growing tall fescue grass and I live in southern california thanks…

North Carolina, Cape Fear River Basin. Burned leaves and branches in my back yard. Planted fescue in late March. New grass in burn areas is dark green, tall and healthy. Right next to the burn area, the new grass is thin, weak and some what yellow. What is in the burn area that is making the grass healthy and thick? What can I add to the thin, limp, yellow grass to make it thick and healthy? We’ve had good rain and I added lime and 10-10-10 when I planted the seed.

The burning returned minerals & nutrients to the soil – That’s why they burn out forests sometimes. It promotes new growth.
A good fertilizer/feed may help in the non burn areas.

Question by I just LOVE LOVE!: When can I begin to walk on my new lawn?
Can someone please give me a time frame in weeks or inches of grass of when I can start to actually walk and have people walk and play on my newly seeded lawn? I planted seeds 12 days ago and the grass is growing (tall fescue) with a few weeds sprowting, but I have a cook out coming up in 3 weeks and want to make sure people can have fun on it by then.
So can you give me a time frame of when its safe for ppl to be on the grass?

After seeding, keep the seed moist for 14 to 21 days to obtain maximum germination. Then, gradually reduce the frequency of watering. Begin mowing at a height of 2 inches when the grass reaches a height of 3 inches. Mow often enough so that the grass does not exceed the 3-inch height. About 5 weeks to your party you should be ok.Cut to 2″, 1 week before your party, then a week after.
Keep the mower blade sharp.

Another responder said a fine, tall turf fescue. I thought fescue had a tendency to clump. This is rocky soil and I plan to top dress the area so there is some dirt for the seed to germinate. I am already killing the weeds. How early in late summer, or early fall can I actually plant the seed.

I live in NE Oklahoma, so not too far from you, and the yards around here are primarily bermuda. It is a hearty grass, stays green even in this nasty heat, and you can’t seem to kill it no matter how hard I try. It has a tendency to creep into flower beds, so keep that in mind.
